Every year, Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October. This year, the unofficial holiday lands on October 15th. Similar to Valentines Day, Sweetest Day is a day dedicated to the sweetheart in your life! Whoever that person may be to you, make them feel special and loved for this one day.
Sweetest Day originated in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922. Popular lore states that Herbert Kingston, a philanthropist and candy store employee, conceived this idea with the intentions to bring joy and happiness to the city’s less fortunate residents. He wanted to remind those who were under-privileged or who may have been neglected that they were not forgotten. During Sweetest day, gifts and candy were sent to people in need; sometimes the candies were even delivered by celebrities! On the first ever Sweetest Day, former movie star Ann Pennington distributed 2,200 boxes of candy to local newspaper boys, to thank them for their public service. Soon after, another famous actress, Theda Bara, helped the Sweetest Day Committee give out 10,000 boxes of candy to people in Cleveland hospitals and orphanages. She wanted to show others, in a tangible way, that someone out there cares about them.
This holiday spread quickly and is still gaining popularity every year. It is now celebrated to show romantic love, appreciation to friends, or to simply make somebody happy. Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois are the top states for Sweetest Day sales, with many other states not far behind. Sweetest day is a reminder that a thoughtful gift or deed can enrich someone’s life.
