Q: I have a helix piercing. I do have a problem with the back of the post. It's a normal backing that is on a lobe piercing. My hair gets caught in it, hard to sleep on and it sticks way out. I'm not sure what kind of piercing I should use. - Rose J.
A: No wonder you’re having problems! A standard post earring is never appropriate for anything other than a standard lobe piercing. You are definitely going to want a flatback labret stud (click here to check those out.) The disc back should help keep your hair out of it, plus it’s far more comfortable. Ideally, it should fit just snugly enough to minimize the amount of movement of the jewelry. If you don’t feel comfortable changing out your jewelry, a professional piercer will be happy to help you out. Just don’t forget to keep quality in mind and remember that ASTM F-136 titanium is always going to be your best bet (you can find some good titanium cartilage options here.) Good luck!
Q: So saline solution is pretty gentle right? Is that the only aftercare option? I have really sensitive skin, so I'm always worried about what I use on it. Are there aftercare options specifically for sensitive skin? - Kiel R.
A: Sterile saline is as gentle as it gets. It’s just sterilized saline solution in a pressurized can. You give your piercing a good spray to loosen any crusties, let it sit for a moment, and then rinse your piercing in the shower. (The rinse prevents any salty residue from the saline from drying onto your piercing.) Then dry your piercing with a clean paper towel or by using a hair dryer set to the lowest setting. Not only is this the current industry standard for aftercare, it’s super gentle and allows the body to heal without interfering with the process. You don’t want to use anything harsh that may interrupt the healing or, worse, neglect cleaning your piercings entirely. (And you NEVER want to put tea tree oil, crushed aspirin, antibacterial sprays/ointments/soap or any harsh chemicals on your piercings!) You can always discuss your concerns with your piercer but sterile saline (no added ingredients!) should be as kind to your skin as you could possibly want. Happy piercing!
